  Thinking in Pictures

As young children, most of us were thinking and
remembering in pictures (see right). As we gained
more words, some of us may have started to prefer
words. Some of us stay with pictures.

         Seeing  Remembering

When we see a picture, we activate the visual parts of our
brains in unique patterns. When we remember the picture,
it's almost like a visual 'echo'. The pattern gets triggered
so we can 'see' it again.

Some people remember so vividly visually, it's like a movie
playing in their head. But not everyone remembers that way.

Sometimes the pictures in our head can be triggered by words or music. The
pictures may also be associated with other types of imagery like movement
or sounds. Below, researchers found that just reading words associated with
different parts of the body activated those
movement areas of the brain. For instance,
reading the word 'kick' activates the 'leg'
        movement area of the brain!

Understanding how we make pictures can be
very important for our creative work and our
ability to solve problems. Some people may have
trouble calling up vivid pictures in their head,
but if that's the case, often other types of imagery are stronger modes
of thinking for them (Spatial, Auditory).
